Moissanite, similar to diamonds, is an incredibly hard and durable gemstone. These diamond look-a-likes don’t dull, degrade, or get cloudy over time like other softer gemstones. If you realize your Moissanite ring isn’t as shiny as it use to be or even looks cloudy, you may start wondering if something happened. Thankfully, something has happened, but it’s really minor and really easy to fix. It’s just dirty.

Why Does My Moissanite Look Cloudy?

Unlike softer and less durable gemstones, moissanite gemstones don’t lose their sparkly or shine over time. They also don’t get cloudy. But moissanite gemstones and jewelry, like other things, can get dirty. Especially if you wear it every day, like while you are cleaning or in the shower.

If you find yourself asking “why is my moissanite not shiny?”, “does moissanite lose its sparkle over time?”, or “does moissanite get cloudy?” it’s probably time to take a few minutes and clean it. Thankfully it’s a straightforward process that you could follow and repeat once or twice a year, depending on how often you wear your moissanite jewelry.

What To Do When Your Moissanite Ring Looks Cloudy

The first thing you’ll want to do is gather all the necessary materials to clean your dirty and smudged moissanite. For that, you’ll need:

    • A small bowl
    • A spare toothbrush
    • A microfiber cleaning cloth
    • Some dish soap
    • Some warm, but not boiling, water
    • And a few minutes of your time

The first thing you’ll want to do is fill your bowl of choice with warm water. We don’t want to boil the water because we’ll be putting our hands in it soon.

Next, add and mix your dish soap into your bowl of water. Be sure to mix it thoroughly, we don’t want any clumps of soap floating around in the water.

Then all you have to do is drop your moissanite in the warm soapy water and wait a few minutes. We want to give the soap time to work its way into the dirt and grim built up on your gemstone. So go grab a snack, take a short walk, or run a few errands.

Finally, all you need to do is take your spare toothbrush and scrub your moissanite in the soapy water. Scrub it for about 30 seconds then take a look, if it’s clean and you’re happy with it you can dry it off with that microfiber cloth you grabbed, otherwise scrub it for another 30 seconds and check again. If you need further assistance or want to understand how to best use your toothbrush for cleaning, you can refer to the toothbrush manual.

After all of that, you’re done. Your moissanite will look good as new!

    How Long Does Moissanite Last?

Moissanite can last a lifetime if you take care of it. While this extremely hard diamond look-a-like is known for being durable, it can still get dull or damaged if you’re careless. Moissanite jewelry can easily last one or several lifetimes if you clean it regularly and kept away from harsh chemical cleaners. The chemical cleaners won’t directly affect the moissanite gemstone, but they could damage the metal holding said gemstone. Making it more likely to fall out and lose it.

Do Fake Moissanite Rings Get Cloudy?

Most fake moissanite jewelry is made of Zircon. A less expensive gemstone that’s normally free of imperfections but can get cloudy with time. The reason for that is Zirconia will absorb oxygen from the air around it, becoming cloudy with time. Cubic zirconia can also react to things like soaps, lotions, and makeup products, losing their shine Zircon.
